Energy, Education and Playing Copycat
Filed Under:
In today's papers there are an array of interesting articles:
- Clegg's 'Grand Vision' for renewable energy has been outlined today by Ben Russell of the Independent. The Lib Dem leader demands the same level of political will that put man on the moon to make the UK energy independent by 2050. The BBC today underlines the Lib Dems committment to reduce our dependence on unreliable suppliers of energy and to instead enahnce and harness our own 'green' energy creating resources. Later this month CentreForum will be dealing with some of these issues in a new report.
- Support for increased numbers of school children achieving better grades at GCSE is stressed in the Times today by the Schools Minister (Andrew Adonis) in his artlice 'Talent isn't rationed, Nor should success be'. Acadamies are highly praised, as they were in the CentreForum publication last month, for providing the leadership and ethos to enable more students to succeed, and other proposals are put forward to bolster the education system with the aim of enabling every child to fulfil their potential.
- For something a little more light-hearted - the Tories have started playing copycat, according to Steve Richards in the Independent today (Tories are learning from Blair), immitating to a 't' the Blairite style before he was elected in 1997. For a comparative anaylsis of the 'steps to success' undertaken in the early 1990s with the actions of Mr Cameron and more specifically Mr Osbourne to date, this makes for an interesting read.

Academies and the future of state education
CentreForum is launching its latest work today - Academies and the future of state education. Schools minister, Lord Adonis will be joined by both Children Schools and Families shadow ministers - David Laws and Michael Gove to discuss its implications at an event this lunchtime. (A recording of the event will be made available on our website as soon as possible)
The launch is trailed today in The Guardian, The Times and The Telegraph - each picking up on different aspects of the collection:
- The Guardian concentrates on the recommendation to expand the academies model into the primary sector - 'Expand academy model into the primary sector'.
- The Telegraph picks up on the proposal to allow businesses to make profits from the schools they sponsor 'Businesses should profit from academies'
- Whilst The Times uses its main leader to support the proposal to expand the academies model from working mainly with failing schools to working across the board.
At the heart of the book is a collection of 7 different academy headmasters talking about different aspects of their work. The text can be downloaded from the CentreForum website.
