Adrian Sanders MP's questions to the next Lib Dem leader

Posted by Russell Eagling at January 19. 2006
The modern day party leader is the conduit through which a party articulates its values, principles and policies. It is through the leader and his or her relationship with the media that a party engages with the electorate. My first question would be to ask if there was anything in a candidates’ personal life that could result in the media making them the story, rather than the message we elect them to convey.

During his Leadership of the Labour Party, Tony Blair has moved Labour to the right of the Lib Dems, consequently losing support at the last two General Elections. I would want to know, as I haven’t come across it, what psephological evidence exists to support a Lib Dem move to the right.

While I want to know what vision they have for our country, I also want to know what values and principles they draw upon to shape their responses to an ever changing world. We already have two Leaders attuned to opinion polls and sound bite responses, I want a Leader who will be different.

In short, we need someone with depth, experience and authority to lead us, so the key question is demonstrate to me how you are that person?
