Is today's politics putting tyle over substance?

With today's media (and, lets face it, the voters) obsessed by celebrity, how far should those seeking to win political office bend to the agenda?
The examples of celebrity politicians are growing; David Cameron, when not on his own WebCameron, is hunting for a 'big name' to take on Ken Livingstone; Lembit Opik continues to find himself the subject of tabloid and magazine gossip, much of which seems courted by himself; and actor Fred Thompson, best known for leading The Hunt for Red October and Dieing Harder with Bruce Willis, seems a credible candidate for the next President of the United States.
