Tony Blair has firmly placed Trident in the midst of the political debate.  The Government's White Paper suggests that Trident should be re-newed and re-newed earlier than many had expected. 

What are his motivations for this?  Should Britain seek to maintain an independent nuclear deterrent, and how independent can we really expect it to be?
